Let's elevate your task 1 score
However, success is well within reach if you approach the task with a clear and systematic strategy. This blog post introduces a step-by-step method that not only simplifies your approach but also enhances your performance in key areas like task achievement and coherence and cohesion—two essential components of the IELTS marking criteria.
This method is a cornerstone of my Atomic IELTS Writing Strategy course, designed to help you master this process while also developing your vocabulary (lexical resource) and grammar skills. Let’s explore how this strategy works.
Start by carefully examining the task and the information provided. Take 2-3 minutes to identify:
The type of data (e.g., trends, comparisons, or processes).
The key features that stand out, such as significant changes or consistent patterns.
The time frame to ensure your writing reflects the correct tense.
💡 Tip: Highlighting or noting down the most important features can help you stay focused while writing.
Once you’ve analysed the data, plan your response by grouping related points together. This makes your writing more logical and easier to follow. Focus on:
Broad trends or key stages that will form the basis of your overview.
Specific details to support these trends in your main paragraphs.
A well-organised response not only reflects clear thinking but also enhances coherence and cohesion, helping you to logically connect your ideas.
Begin your response by paraphrasing the task prompt to explain what the visual data represents. This sets the context for your answer without simply copying the question.
The overview summarises the most important features or trends in the data. It should:
Focus on broad patterns rather than individual data points.
Be concise, offering 2-3 sentences that capture the essence of the information.
💡 Tip: A clear overview is essential for scoring well in task achievement. It shows your ability to identify the main points effectively.
In the main paragraphs, expand on the points introduced in your overview. Use specific details, such as numbers or comparisons, to explain the trends. Ensure your writing flows logically by grouping related details and using linking phrases, such as:
"In contrast,..."
"Similarly,..."
"While X increased, Y declined..."
Keep the details relevant and avoid including every minor piece of information.
Use the last 2-3 minutes to carefully check your response. Look out for:
Grammar and spelling errors.
Consistent use of tenses.
Repetition of words—try to vary your vocabulary where possible.
💡 Tip: Reviewing your work not only helps avoid mistakes but also ensures your response meets the IELTS requirements for coherence and cohesion.
While this strategy forms a strong foundation, mastering it requires consistent practice. That’s where the Atomic IELTS Writing Course comes in. The course offers a comprehensive programme to:
