In this part, you will receive a cue card with a topic and prompts to guide your talk.
Part 2 of the IELTS Speaking Test, often called the ‘long turn’, is your chance to showcase your ability to speak at length on a given topic. This section lasts for about 3-4 minutes, including 1 minute for preparation and up to 2 minutes of speaking time. In this part, you will receive a cue card with a topic and prompts to guide your talk. You’ll also be given a piece of paper and a pencil to make notes during your 1-minute preparation time. Your goal is to deliver a well-organised and fluent response.
A Memorable Experience
Describe a memorable event in your life.
You should say:
What the event was
When and where it happened
Who was involved
And explain why it was memorable.
A Favourite Place
Describe a place you enjoy visiting.
You should say:
Where it is
What you do there
Why you like it
And explain how you feel when you are there.
An Inspiring Person
Describe someone who inspires you.
You should say:
Who this person is
How you know them
What they have done that inspires you
And explain why they inspire you.
A Book or Film
Describe a book or film that you enjoyed.
You should say:
What it is about
Why you liked it
Who you would recommend it to
And explain what makes it special.
A Useful Skill
Describe a skill you have learned that is useful.
You should say:
What the skill is
How you learned it
Why it is useful
And explain how you use this skill in your life.
A Recent Holiday
Describe a holiday you recently went on.
You should say:
Where you went
What you did
Who you went with
And explain why you enjoyed it.
Structure Your Response Use the 1-minute preparation time to plan your answer. Organise your talk into clear sections: introduction, main points, and conclusion.
Use Descriptive Language Include vivid details to make your response more engaging. For instance, instead of saying “It was a nice place,” you could say, “The place had stunning views of the mountains and a serene atmosphere.”
Stay on Topic Focus on the prompts given on the cue card and avoid going off on tangents.
Practice Timing Ensure your response lasts close to 2 minutes. Practise with a timer to get a feel for the duration.
