Before we think about strategies, it’s essential to know the structure of the IELTS Speaking Exam. The test lasts 11-14 minutes and consists of three parts:
Part 1: Introduction and Interview
General questions about your life, interests, and background.
Part 2: Long Turn
A 1-minute preparation followed by a 2-minute talk on a given topic.
Part 3: Discussion
More in-depth questions related to the Part 2 topic, assessing your analytical and reasoning skills.
You can find typical IELTS speaking test question prompts here.
Fluency and Coherence – How well you can express ideas without hesitation.
Lexical Resource – Your range of vocabulary and ability to use it effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy – The variety and correctness of your sentence structures.
Pronunciation – Your clarity, intonation, and ability to be understood.
Understanding these descriptors (and how they are categorised within the different band scores) can help you focus your preparation effectively.
By aligning your strategies with the assessment criteria, you can organise your preparation effectively. Here are some ideas to set you up for IELTS Speaking success:
1. Master Fluency and Coherence
Try to speak in English for a few minutes (to a friend, IELTS partner or even just to yourself!), every day! Focus on getting 1% better regularly, the Atomic IELTS way!
Practise your speaking at a natural pace without unnecessary pauses.
Think about and build on various topics which you may meet in the IELTS exam, to build confidence.
2. Build a Strong Lexical Resource
Expand your vocabulary by reading and listening to English daily.
Learn topic-specific phrases, especially for common themes like education, technology, and travel.
Avoid overusing complex words; focus on accurate and natural usage.
3. Improve Grammatical Range and Accuracy
Use a variety of sentence structures, including conditional and complex sentences.
Pay attention to verb tenses and subject-verb agreement.
Practise with a teacher or language partner to get feedback on your grammar.
4. Don't Forget Pronunciation
Practise intonation, stress, and rhythm to sound more natural.
Record yourself to identify and improve pronunciation challenges.
Remember, you don't need to sound like a native speaker: focus on clarity and intelligibility rather than trying to imitate a specific accent.
